What is the principle behind the Venturi wet dust collector?
A Venturi wet dust collector, also known as a Venturi scrubber or Venturi wet scrubber, is an air pollution control device designed to remove particulate matter from an air stream by using the principles of gas-liquid contact. It is particularly effective in capturing fine particles and aerosols. The basic principle behind a Venturi wet dust collector involves creating a high-velocity gas stream that passes through a Venturi throat, where water or another liquid is introduced to capture and remove the dust particles.
High-Velocity Gas Stream:
The process begins with a high-velocity gas stream containing particulate matter (dust or aerosols). This contaminated gas enters the Venturi scrubber.
Venturi Throat:
The Venturi throat is a constricted section within the scrubber where the gas velocity increases. As the gas accelerates through the Venturi throat, a low-pressure zone is created.
Liquid Injection:
Water or another liquid is injected into the high-velocity gas stream at or near the Venturi throat. This liquid can be introduced through nozzles or spray systems.
Gas-Liquid Contact:
The injected liquid forms small droplets that are dispersed throughout the gas stream. These liquid droplets create a large surface area for contact with the dust particles present in the gas.
Particle Capture:
The high-velocity gas stream, now laden with liquid droplets, passes through the contaminated air. The fine dust particles present in the gas come into contact with the liquid droplets, and the particles adhere to the droplets through mechanisms such as impaction, interception, and diffusion.
Formation of Wet Slurry:
The dust-laden liquid droplets and the captured particles combine to form a wet slurry.
Separation of Wet Slurry:
The wet slurry, containing the captured dust particles, is then separated from the gas stream. This separation can occur through a variety of mechanisms, such as centrifugal force, gravity settling, or additional separation devices within the Venturi scrubber.
Cleaned Gas Exit:
The cleaned gas, now free of a significant portion of the particulate matter, exits the Venturi scrubber.

Venturi Tube:
The Venturi tube is a narrow, constricted section of the dust collector where the airflow is accelerated. This constriction creates a pressure drop, and according to the Venturi effect, the velocity of the air increases.
Water Spray System:
Water is introduced into the Venturi tube through a spray system. This water serves multiple purposes:It captures and wets the dust particles present in the air.It enhances the Venturi effect by creating a high-velocity, turbulent airflow.
High-Velocity Airflow:
As the air passes through the Venturi tube, its velocity increases due to the narrowing of the tube. This high-velocity airflow creates a low-pressure region, drawing in dust-laden air.
Dust Particle Capture:
The high-velocity air carries the dust particles into the Venturi tube. The water spray system wets and captures the dust particles, causing them to become heavier and drop out of the air stream.
Water Collection Basin:
At the bottom of the Venturi tube, there is a water collection basin where the captured dust-laden water collects. This basin may also include a sump for recirculating and reusing water in the system.
Secondary Scrubbing Section (Optional):
Some Venturi wet dust collectors include a secondary scrubbing section downstream of the Venturi tube. This section provides additional contact time between the air and water, further promoting the removal of fine particles.
Mist Eliminator (Optional):
To prevent water droplets from being released into the atmosphere, a mist eliminator may be incorporated. This component helps separate water droplets from the cleaned air before it is discharged.
Exhaust Fan:
An exhaust fan or blower is used to draw the air through the Venturi tube and the wet scrubbing components. This fan ensures a continuous flow of air through the system.
